You may have heard these terms before. Its pretty much metaphysics 101. Think of it as self-defense for the psychic senses. I mean, it makes sense that if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can open yourself to energies that you don’t want to absorb; or you can find yourself losing your own energy very quickly. Knowing about centering, shielding, and grounding can help you to manage those energies better, so that you can stay ‘in the world, but not of it,’ and continue to work with metaphysical energy without draining yourself, or getting overwhelmed. Let’s start with grounding.
Grounding is a way of staying focused and stress free. Think about an electrical current; it needs to be grounded so that any leaking current gets safely carried away. It’s the same when grounding psychic energy. It sounds mysterious, but it isn’t. It’s as simple as using your physical senses to connect to something that is physical and tangible. Pet an animal, have a bath or a shower, eat or drink something, smell a soothing scent, look at something calming.
You can use your breath to ground, too. Breathe deeply in through your nose, and exhale out through your mouth. Breathe in peace, and breathe out the stress. This can quite quickly help to bring you back to your core, and make you feel grounded again.
I’m going to talk about centering next, because if you’re not grounded, you’re probably not going to be able to find your center again. Grounding calms you down, centering brings you back into your being, and reminds you of who you are. Just like there are different ways of grounding, there are different ways of centering.
Working with your strongest physical sense is a good way to center. If you relate to the world by what you see, then focus on a soothing vision, either a real scene, or close your eyes and see it in your mind. If your strongest physical sense is sound, then listen to soothing music, sing, or hum, or chant. You can use touch, or taste, or smell, too. Play around with some of them until you find the one that is right for you.
Finally we come to shielding, and to me this should be your main focus, but if you’re not grounded or centered then shielding isn’t going to do you much good! Shielding is your energy armor, so that you don’t leak your own energy, and you don’t absorb unwanted energy from others. You can probably think of people in your life who leave you feel drained when you’ve been in their company. Shielding will help prevent that from happening, and it’s equally effective whether you’re doing this in spiritual or psychic work; or whether you just want to get through the work day in one piece!
If you research shielding on the internet, you’ll find there are many ways to do it. Some people imagine themselves as a big mirror, so that whatever is tossed their direction is reflected away from them. Some people imagine themselves in a full suit of invisible armor. Others put themselves in a bubble, or maybe see themselves encased in stone. It doesn’t matter quite how you shield, as long as you find a way that works for you.
That’s it! It really is that simple. Use these techniques to start your morning, and you should find your energy levels stay more balanced throughout the day.
