Wouldn’t it be great if you could ward off evil forever, and be free from any negative energy that might come your way? It’s nearly possible, but before you can do this, you have to understand a bit about the way that things work. For example, you always have to have a correspondence of light and dark, night and day, to keep things balanced. Life is always going to throw challenges at you–that’s why it’s called ‘life’ and not ‘perfection.’ However, with a bit of focus and planning, you can ensure that you get more positive days and good experiences than bad ones. A traditional witch bottle can help you to do just that.
A witch bottle doesn’t have to be used only by witches. It’s a very old charm, and it will not cause harm to anyone unless they are approaching you with malice in mind. This type of protection works because of the symbolism of the sharp and sour objects that are used. You’re going to need the following everyday items:
- A jar with a tight lid
- I prefer a glass jar, but you have to be careful with this, because (obviously) glass is fragile. A clear plastic jar like a mayo jar or a peanut butter jar will also work, but ensure that it is clear.
- Pieces of broken glass.
- This can be any glass, but I like to break a glass (like another old glass jar, for example) for this specific purpose, and envision the glass protecting me as I break it. This is not necessary, but it does seem to add belt to the bottle.
- Nails or pins
- Any kind of nail or pin can be used, the older and more rusty it is, the better it seems to work. These can be obtained from a myriad of places. Ask at your salvage store or hardware, or even grab some sewing pins. If you need to get them rusty, leave them out in the rain, or better yet, soak them in some salt water–salt is a powerful protectant, too.
- Herbs
- Rue is the absolute best for this. Angelica is also a very strong protection herb, and is fairly easy to obtain. If you cannot get rue or angelica, then use rosemary. Dried common rue Ruta graveolens can be purchased online or from an apothecary. Angelica can also be obtained from grocers and bakers. Rosemary is available fresh or dried from most supermarkets and grocery stores.
- Vinegar
- Common household vinegar bought from the grocery is fine for this. The amount of vinegar needed will coincide with the size of jar being used.
To make the witch bottle, fill the jar or bottle with broken glass, the rusty nails or pins, and anything else sharp that you wish to include. Some people add thorns and splintered wood. Just use what you have to hand, it doesn’t have to be costly. I’ve added broken bits of pottery or other bits of sharp metal in the past. Now fill the jar with the vinegar. You can also add lemon juice or sour wine. I’ve known some people to add urine, too–and if you want to go this route, you can purchase wild animal urine from some hunting specialists, or just do it the old fashioned way and catch a bit of your tinkle!
All that is left to do now is to put the lid on the jar and make sure it is tight. Some people seal it with wax, but I’ve never found it necessary to do so, unless of course you want to make this part of your protection ceremony. When the jar is filled and sealed, bury it in your yard, just outside your front door. This is not a replacement for common sense, but it will add some powerful protection to your property. It may not ward off evil forever, but a good witch jar will last for several years before it needs replacing.
